Why do AI Masks, Depth Masks, or Nik plugins sometimes take longer to load or respond?

This information applies to the latest version.

Several background processes can affect performance, especially during first use:

  • Initial AI processing per image: When using AI Masks or Depth Masks for the first time on an image, the system needs to analyze the image (e.g. detect subjects or generate a depth map). This may take a few moments. Once completed, further adjustments are applied instantly.
  • First launch of Nik plugins: The first time you launch a Nik plugin, AI models are compiled for future use. This can make the initial startup slower, but subsequent launches will be faster.
  • GPU driver updates (Windows): On Windows, the application may occasionally check for and download updated GPU drivers at startup. This runs in the background and can take some time. Since there is currently no notification, this may appear as a delay. Improvements to user notifications are planned.
