DxO PhotoLab 3 requirements and options when working with a RAW file.

If you want to work with a RAW file:

  • Support for the camera is REQUIRED
    • DxO PhotoLab 3 will refuse to work with RAW files from unsupported cameras.
    • Support for new cameras is added through updates of the application.
    • We only add support for new cameras for DxO PhotoLab 3.
      • These updates are free if you own a DxO PhotoLab 3 license.
      • If you own an older version (DxO PhotoLab 2, DxO PhotoLab, DxO OpticsPro 11, 10, 9, 8...) you must buy an upgrade to DxO PhotoLab 3 to get support for new cameras (Please note that Capture One and Lightroom have exactly the same policy for their products sold under perpetual licenses (the alternative being a subscription...).
  • Lens module is OPTIONAL
    • DxO PhotoLab 3 will work with RAW files taken with an unsupported lens (as long it supports the camera).
      • But in this case, automatic lens correction (distortion, vignetting, chromatic aberration, lens softness) won’t be available.
      • However, some automated corrections based on camera calibration or image analysis (such as Smart Lighting or Noise reduction) will be applied anyway. And all manual tools (for lens correction and other adjustments) are available of course.
    • New lens modules do not require an update of the application (again, as long as the camera is supported), but DxO OpticsPro will prompt you to download the right module the first time you open an image taken with this lens.
    • We still add new lens modules for older versions (currently down to DxO OpticsPro 8).
      • Of course, this is limited to the cameras these older versions support.

In the case of a JPEG file, support for the camera becomes optional (DxO PhotoLab 3 can open JPEG files from any camera), but having it enables automatic noise reduction. Lens modules are still optional and everything I explained for RAW files is still valid.
