Will the DxO PhotoLab 5 ESSENTIAL Edition which is included in any purchase/upgrade to Nik Collection 5 be a separate program just like it used to be, or will it only be a “plug-in” of Nik Collection 5?

The version of DxO PhotoLab 5 ESSENTIAL Edition that is coming with Nik Collection 5 purchase Is a standalone application and can serve Nik Collection as a host application in order to work with RAW files. In addition, Nik Collection 5 will continue to work in standalone mode and with certified third-party software. DxO PhotoLab 5 ESSENTIAL/ELITE is not required to use Nik Collection 5 and vice versa. The applications have different activation codes and are upgraded separately.
