DeepPRIME* and DeepPRIME XD* hardware acceleration further information.

This information applies to versions: (4, 5), 6

Elite Edition With DeepPRIME and even more with DeepPRIME XD*, DxO PhotoLab makes a giant leap forward in digital noise reduction: this is the most advanced denoising technology available today on the market. DeepPRIME was created using a structure called ‘Deep neural network’ to mimic the behavior of a human brain. By looking at billions of noisy raw input samples and clean output samples, the neural network has developed a highly sophisticated raw conversion algorithm.

Using such a resulting neural network to demosaic and denoise a picture, is a very heavy computing task, and such computational power, unthinkable just a few years ago, is now possible thanks to modern GPUs (graphics processing units) which efficiently handle all the needed heavy work.

DeepPRIME and DeepPRIME XD* is fully GPU optimized, on Windows as well as on macOS.

For a better experience, be sure to at least match our recommended requirements:

  • Windows recommended requirements:

VIDIA RTX™ 2060, AMD Radeon™ RX 6600 or better with latest drivers

  • macOS recommended requirements:

AMD Radeon™ Pro 580X or better for Intel® Macs

On such GPUs, you should expect a processing time of about 2 Mpx per second (or faster with better GPUs). To compare and get an idea of GPUs computational power, you can have a look at independent online benchmarks (e.g. https://www.videocardbenchmark.net or https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gpu-hierarchy,4388.html).

Is it still possible to use DeepPRIME even if I don’t have a recommended GPU?

Yes, DeepPRIME, even if it’s heavily optimized for GPU acceleration, can be used on a computer that doesn’t match the recommended requirements, or that has an incompatible GPU (incompatible graphics cards are automatically disabled by DxO PhotoLab). Just keep in mind though that processing time will increase significantly. Output quality, on the other hand, will still be exactly the same.

Get the most out of DeepPRIME with the following tips:

Be sure to update both your OS and your GPU drivers to the latest version available. DxO PhotoLab automatically detects and selects the best hardware available to accelerate DeepPRIME, but on some particular configurations, you may need to manually select this option (by default it’s set to “Auto select” which works in most situations). For this, try changing the default value to “Use CPU only” or manually select the detected GPU instead. DxO PhotoLab has been extensively tested with low-end GPUs (like the AMD RX550 for instance) to find the best balance between rendering time and software stability.

Under Windows, and only if you own a low-end GPU, you may want to trade some display stutter with faster DeepPRIME processing. For this, you need to change a hidden setting on your computer. WARNING: this may lead to stutter and/or instability. Use it at your own risk! You should not attempt it if you don’t know what you are doing!

Follow those steps:

  1. Close DxO PhotoLab.
  2. Locate and edit the following file: "C:\Program Files\DxO\DxO PhotoLab 6 \DxO.PhotoLab.exe.config”. (or respective version)
  3. Just under the “WinMLUseGraphicQueue” setting, replace “<value>False</value>” with “<value>True</value>”.
  4. Restart DxO PhotoLab.

If you do not experience any significant improvement or if your machine acts weirdly, we strongly recommend reverting it back to its default value!

Please note: this hidden setting only works on some low-end GPUs, most graphic cards are unaffected.

*DeepPRIME noise reduction is only available in DxO PhotoLab ELITE Edition, DeepPRIME XD noise reduction is only available in DxO PhotoLab 6 ELITE Edition.
